MARK AND RANDY
Randy was a scrawny kid, wiry and slight
But Randy was the toughest kid I knew
He wasn't scared of anything, he never lost a fight
And Lord knows Randy started quite a few
When Randy wasn't scuffling he was laughing
We're sharing a smoke, someone's telling a joke
But I think he's laughing at you
But you never saw a laugh disappear so fast
Randy was the saddest kid I knew
II
Mom was always begging me to spend some time with Mark
The kid you wouldn't hang with around the school
Mark was always reading and Mark was in the Boy Scouts
Too good but not too cool
Fishing trips and biking, camping out and hiking
One more mile, single file, just to prove you could
Maybe I would even start to be a little more like Mark
But I knew that I'd never be that good
III
Me and Randy stole some things that Summer
Next time I'm gonna be the lookout, because the last time it was you
Anything he wanted, he'd just put it in his pocket
Randy was the baddest kid I knew
But one day you cross a portal and you find you're not immortal
Bravado cedes and kneels and yields to fear
They're leaving one by one, another eulogy, another psalm
Taking stories with them someone needs to hear
IV
Mark went into business, he makes those big decisions
You see the name on highway signs and concert halls
He's a pillar of philanthropy, he's given more than I will ever see
I like to lie and tell you we were close
It ended bad for Randy, I heard it from a friend
Fearless as he pushed the needle through
And me and my acoustic, we write a little music
It's the only thing that I know how to do
They're leaving one by one, another eulogy, another psalm
And all I have are stories someone needs to hear
Every day is shorter, remind your son and daughter
Cause one day this will all just disappear
